Gucci Mane Receives 3-Year Sentence on Federal Weapons Charges

Last week, Gucci Mane released his third album of 2014, but it’ll be a while before he’s back in the studio again. The rapper, who pled guilty to unlawful firearms possession in May, was just handed a 39-month sentence by a federal judge.

Gucci, aka Radric Davis, has already spent 11 months in custody, meaning he has 28 months left on his sentence. While that seems like a long time, it’s a much easier stretch than the one he might have received had he not pled guilty. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution states the felony charges could have resulted in up to a 10-year sentence.

U.S. District Judge Steve Jones warned Gucci that he should consider this sentence a wake-up call, and it sounds like Gucci’s legal team is trying to make sure this is the last time he faces prison time. His lawyer has asked the judge to recommend to the Bureau of Prisons that Gucci serve out his sentence in a West Coast facility, where he would be far away from the negative influences he might be subjected to closer to home.

“He doesn’t want anything to distract him,” attorney Drew Finding said. “He wants to get back to the workplace and the workplace is the stage.”

That said, even after release Gucci’s gonna find it hard to tour. The terms of his probation include several travel restrictions. Though the sentence may sound harsh and the judge stern, Judge Jones did have some kind words. “According to young people, my nieces and nephews, you are quite cool.”

Uh, yeah, judge. He’s “the coldest MC in the game.”
