E! Newscaught up with SOA director Paris Barclay (who frequently directs Glee episodes as well) at BAFTA's annual pre-Emmys tea party at the SLS Hotel in Los Angeles this past weekend and he couldn’t stop gushing about Lea. “We love her,” Paris declared. “We're trying to find a way to bring her back.”
Sons of Anarchy — a raw drama about a motorcycle club in California — couldn’t be more different from Glee, but Paris maintains that Lea handled her new gig, which included little to no makeup, dowdy clothes, and a smoking habit, like a pro. Calling Lea’s role and make-under “tough”, Paris also discussed how Rachel Berry became Gertie. “It had to do with makeup and wardrobe,” he said. “She looks a little bigger. We didn't pad her up but she looks a little bigger than she normally does. Lighting has to do with it, too.”
And not only did Lea look the part, but she held her own from an artistic standpoint as well. According to Paris,“Her acting was completely naturalistic.” SOA showrunner Kurt Sutter seems to agree, stating in a recent interview that the 27-year-old actress “completely embraced” the show. Lea also received high praise from Kurt after some fans of the FX drama questioned his choice to cast her. “Look beyond the song and dance. The kid has chops,” he told one naysayer.
Lea’s first SOA episode is scheduled to air on October 14 at 9 p.m. ET on FX, and we’re crossing our fingers that won’t be the only time we see her pop up in Charming.
