Gwar Frontman Dave Brockie Found Dead at Age 50

Dave Brockie — aka Oderus Urungus, frontman for the heavy metal band Gwar — was found dead in his Richmond, VA, home on Sunday, March 23. He was 50.

Law enforcement told TMZ Dave was found by his roommate, and the singer was reportedly sitting upright in a chair in the home. Foul play is not suspected, but a cause of death has yet to be determined by the medical examiner.

"Dave was one of the funniest, smartest, most creative and energetic persons I've known," former Gwar bassist Mike Bishop told Richmond's Style Weekly. "He was brash sometimes, always crass, irreverent, he was hilarious in every way. But he was also deeply intelligent and interested in life, history, politics and art. His penchant for scatological humors belied a lucid wit. He was a criminally underrated lyricist and hard rock vocalist, one of the best, ever! A great front man, a great painter, writer, he was also a hell of a bass guitarist. I loved him. He was capable of great empathy and had a real sense of justice."

The Grammy-nominated band is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year and recently announced it would hold its fifth Gwar-B-Q concert in Richmond in August. Gwar's self-described "Scumdogs of the Universe" and "provocateurs" are known for comically outlandish costumes and intentionally offensive theatrics.

In 2011, the band lost its guitarist Cory Smoot when he had a heart attack while the band was on tour in North Dakota. Fans are still reeling from the news of Dave’s death and the Richmond weekly plans to share the band's official statement, when it's released.
