Hayden Panettiere found herself in the middle of a fashion controversy at Sunday’s Golden Globes Awards.

The Nashville actress was criticized for her outfit choice at the event but not because of how the dress looked. While celebrities typically borrow gowns from designers themselves for the red carpet, Hayden bought her black and white Tom Ford dress off-the-rack.

Tom is reportedly known for dressing just one woman per awards show and on the night of the Golden Globes, the designer had chosen Naomi Watts to wear his duds. Hayden, however, couldn’t keep herself from Tom’s gorgeous designs.

When asked by Giuliana Rancic what she was wearing on the red carpet, Hayden responded, “Tom Ford. It’s the first time I’ve ever worn him, because I’ve been begging… I feel sexy in it, I feel comfortable in it, and I’m in Tom Ford. I would wear a plastic bag if it was designed by him.”

It wasn’t long before fashion naysayers began tweeting about Hayden’s supposed faux pas.

“Tom Ford confirms to me he ONLY dressed #NaomiWatts tonight,” fashion reporter Jim Shi tweeted. “Hayden Panettiere BOUGHT her Tom Ford dress at RETAIL. Tsk, tsk.”

But while those in the world of high fashion think Hayden slipped up, the designer himself seemed perfectly pleased to have Hayden wear one of his gowns. The Nashville star took to Twitter the day after the awards to share a photo of flowers sent to her by the designer along with a card that read, “Dear Hayden, You looked beautiful last night. Thank you for your kind words. Much love, Tom.”
