The new alien drama Star-Crossed has landed on The CW... and it brought with it futuristic visual effects, alien vs. human fight scenes, a cast of ridiculously good-looking stars, and one epic tale of forbidden love.
Emery (Aimee Teegarden) and Roman (Matt Lanter), an alien, met once before — ten years ago when his Atrian ship crashed down to earth. She gave him shelter in her family’s shed, but all the cold spaghetti, warm blankets and good intentions in the world couldn’t save Roman from the SWAT team-style ambush that awaited him.
Emery assumed that her alien friend had died, until 10 years later, when she catches a glimpse of the scar on Roman’s abs — we mean, where else? the people need a gratuitous shot of Matt Lanter’s abs! — where the gun had struck him down. The childhood allies are reunited, and it’s instantly obvious that they share an intense chemistry.
But will this star-crossed love ever be able to explore their forbidden romance? Humans and Atrians can barely co-exist without coming to blows. The humans are petrified that the aliens wish them harm. (And, though many Atrians come in peace, it seems very possible that others do want to take over.)
The premise of Star-Crossed is incredibly intriguing. With conflicts over integration at the center of the story, the social and political statements and implications bring something new and different to the show.
Still, Emery and Roman’s love story will have to win people over. Will fans get behind the romance between that one girl from Friday Night Lights and the hot guy from 90210? That remains to be seen. So far, we haven’t seen much from them. Aside from a few longing glances, they’ve only pressed their hands together in the woods and breathed heavily. Not even a kiss yet... that got interrupted by an all-too-inconvenient phone call.
