The May 11 premiere of Showtime scarefest Penny Dreadful brings with it the return of a '00s hottie we hadn't heard from in quite some time: Josh Hartnett.

The 35-year-old actor has kept a low profile in the last several years. In fact, the last major studio movie in which he appeared was 2007's 30 Days of Night.

So why give up a career full of blockbusters like Pearl Harbor, Black Hawk Down, and Sin City for a string of indie movies and a life away from the public eye?

"I was on the cover of every magazine," he tells Details in a new interview. "I couldn't really go anywhere. I didn't feel comfortable in my own skin. I was alone. I didn't trust anyone. So I went back to Minnesota and got back together with my old friends — ended up getting back together with my high-school girlfriend for a while — and I didn't do any filming for 18 months. I'm still finding my way through all that."

"I did, like, 10 independent films, but none of them landed with an audience," he continues, adding that the people who did tell him they saw those movies saw them everywhere but the multiplex. "So I figured I could continue to beat my head against the wall, or I could take a different tack and try something else."

And thus, Josh is trying his hand at TV. And we can't wait to see his spooky turn on the Showtime drama. Welcome back, dude!
