Considering his new song is called "Chains," you might think that Nick Jonas's ensuing music video would feature Fifty Shades-level BDSM. But, as you can see in the vid below, these chains are more metaphorical! (Sorry if you're disappointed!)

While the 21-year-old's new persona isn't quite that adult, Nick's cinematic new video does boast a tone much darker than anything we saw during the Jonas Brothers era.

The lyrics have him struggling and succumbing to the "chains" of a woman's love — and the video depicts him floating in a derelict and flooded ballroom, free-falling through tumultuous skies, and getting caught up in a riot. How dramatic!

Nick released the fresh tune without much fanfare a week ago — through post-Jonas Brothers homebase Island Records. Now we're just wondering when his solo album will drop!

Meanwhile, Nick has other irons in the fire: he's also a star of the new boxing drama Kingdom. The series will premiere on DirecTV's Audience Network on October 8 at 9 p.m. ET.

Unlike his character in this music video, it sounds like Nick is upwardly mobile!
