The Walking Dead: How You Can Be Cast on the Show

Would you like to shuffle and ooze your way onto AMC’s The Walking Dead? Heck yeah, you would!

Season 4 is supposed to finish filming around November 22, 2013, so it may be too late to get cast for this season. But we know Season 5 is coming, and they’ll probably start filming in May, like they did last year, so you have time to get yourself prepared.

The Walking Dead tapes in the Atlanta, Georgia area (including the surrounding towns of Senoia, Newnan, Grantville, etc.) so it would help if you parked yourself in that region.

According to Screen Crush, the show consistently works with Extras Casting Atlanta to cast walker/zombie extras. You can check the Extras Casting Atlanta Facebook page, and also fill out a casting profile here at the official ECA site to join their database. You can also get more general casting and production details here at Acting Auditions.

Back in 2012, TWD executive producer and special effects guru told CNN what it takes to make a good zombie.

“At the beginning of each season, we have what we call ‘Zombie School,’ and what that does is give me an opportunity to audition anywhere from 150 to 200 extras,” Greg said. “I grade them on two criteria: Look and performance. We have a visual aesthetic that is really important to the show and the zombies, that they look thin and gaunt and emaciated. We tend to go with thinner people who have a specific kind of bone structure, so when we put prosthetic on them, because makeup is an additive process, it doesn't look like we're building out their face too much. The second part of it is performance. The actor has to bring it to life. It's very important that our walkers are genuine and authentic.” Read more from him here.

So move to Atlanta, fill out a casting profile, check for upcoming casting calls, and re-watch the show to see how the zombies look and move so you can practice at home. Good luck! We hope to see you on TV someday … and sorry in advance if you have an ugly second death.

The Walking Dead airs Sunday nights at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
