How Popular Is Orange Is the New Black? Netflix Remains “Cryptic”

We all know Netflix dramedy Orange Is the New Black is the reigning queen of buzz — it premiered this summer, and it feels like the whole world is still talking about it. But how well does word-of-mouth praise translate into actual viewers? So far, Netflix has kept its metrics under wraps — even from OITNB creator Jenji Kohan herself!

While Netflix did reveal that OITNB is its most watched original program yet, Jenji told The New York Times that the Netflix bigwigs refuse to give her exact numbers. "They say things like, 'We're very pleased,'" she explained. "They're very cryptic."

Fortunately, Jenji is taking this unusual situation in stride. She's worked in the TV industry for years, so she initially found not knowing the ratings odd, but now she jokes that she finds being in "the dark" about the numbers "very restful and easy on the eyes."

As fans of the show, we also find it a little difficult not to know exactly how well one of our fave series is doing. Still, it sounds like Orange Is the New black is more than meeting Netflix's expectations, and now that it's scored a Golden Globe nomination for star Taylor Schilling, we feel pretty confident that it will continue to last for seasons to come.
