We have a feeling that the fifth season of Pretty Little Liars will be like nothing we’ve ever seen before from this show — and that’s awesome. Much of this has to do with the fact that Alison DiLaurentis (Sasha Pieterse) will be returning to Rosewood and attempting to reintegrate back into life as a “normal” teenager. How will Ali be different in Season 5?
Pretty Little Liars writer Joseph Dougherty chatted to Alloy Entertainment about Ali’s character in Season 5: “There’s a newness, a freshness to the stories we’re breaking because of her presence,” he said.” If you’re thinking this might be a thinly veiled euphemism for drama, then you might not be far off. As Joseph puts it: “Alison was a disruptive figure for the Liars when she was not on the scene. Now, she’s gonna be on the scene.” Yikes! Sounds like Rosewood better buckle up. Ali’s back in town!
But how will Ali’s presence impact all of the Liars’ personally?: “I think they’re all affected for different reasons,” Joseph explained. “Really when you think about it Spencer [for sure] because of her ascendency. Hanna because she’s not the same person [anymore] or Emily for that matter or Aria. They’ve all changed. So, while Ali might want to come back to the Rosewood High School she left, it’s gone. She’s gotta find her new role as well as with the other girls.”
It is sometimes easy to forget about Ali’s own emotional vulnerability in a circumstance like this, given she is so often on the offensive, but from Joseph’s last comment, returning to Rosewood is going to be incredibly hard for the former mean girl. Not only has it changed, but she’s changed. Who knows what her role in the high school hierarchy will look like now — or how much she will even care about the social ladder.
