We love to theorize about what’s to come on The Walking Dead, but we'll be the first to admit that we have no idea how the hit television show will end. For starters, it seems like there isn’t even an end in sight. TWD is ratings gold for AMC, and showrunner Scott Gimple recently told Larry King that the show could feasibly run for another ten years or more. There’s also the fact that the show is based on Robert Kirkman’s comics of the same name, which are still being written.
Scott told Larry that he could see the comics continuing forever, but he knows that the TV show will have a more finite shelf-life. So, with that said, does the respected showrunner have any idea how the series will end, assuming he’s still at the helm if and when it goes off the air?
But of course! “You know, it’s funny. The comic book continues to this day, the comic book that the show is based upon...Robert has said he’s going to go at least 300 issues so it’s kind of a strange thing,” Scott said to Larry when asked if he had a series finale in mind. “I read the comic every month as a fan, and in the week I think ‘Ok, how does this lead to the greater story?’ I will say from an emotional standpoint I do have an ending in mind, but I want it to suss with the work that Robert’s doing.”
Well, we may be clueless, but we’re glad Scott has an idea of how the show will conclude, even if he’s not dishing out any specifics. Season 5 will mark his second season as showrunner, and by every indication AMC loves what he’s doing. Season 4 broke records left and right and there’s no reason Season 5 shouldn’t reach new heights. Terminus alone has our interest piqued!
And even though the end to TWD doesn’t seem near, we really respect that Scott wants it to gel with what Robert has planned for the comics. Part of what made people love Season 4 so much was the way that Scott “remixed” the comics, and we hope he gets to do that to the very end of the series!
Are you surprised that Scott has an ending in mind at this point, or does it make perfect sense? Check out the full interview below and tell us what you think!
The Walking Dead Season 5 premieres in October 2014 on AMC.
