Since Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder broke up in May 2013, things have been amicable between the Vampire Diaries co-stars, who are still exchanging friendly tweets and working together on the hit CW drama. However, it appears that the duo is closer than we thought — Nina was by Ian’s side as his pup Nietzsche gave birth last night.

While they didn’t snap photos of their off-screen reunion, Nina posted an adorable picture of the new mama nursing her puppies! “Birthing little Nietzsches ...Such a beautiful + equally terrifying thing to witness...The miracle of life :) #Wow @iansomerhalder @thejram,” she captioned the pic.

Ian didn’t mention Nina in his captions, choosing instead to focus on the new mama as she gave birth in Atlanta. “She's in Labor! Aunt @thejram (aka midwife) & Uncle @polivierjr our little Nietzsche girl is about to drop a ton of love into the world,” he captioned a photo of her staring into the camera.

Of course, he also added a message about overpopulation, writing, “World please send super-positive energy to this very brave and very scared little girl. THIS ignites even more, ISF's vision and the absolute necessity to finish research and distribute SAFE species-specific oral sterilization drugs for dogs and cats! Lets put our heads together and end OVER POPULATION OF THESE INCREDIBLE ANIMALS! Thank you!”

But wait, there’s more! He snapped a cute selfie looking at Nietz, writing, “Live from the whelping box In Atlanta! Panting, pushing, contractions - wow. Make no mistake about it - Ladies rule...Women of every species blow my mind...Incredible what mamas go through! Love to you mamas-all over the world. Jeez.”

Wow. We feel like we were right there in the action thanks to Ian’s description. Congrats to Ian, Nietzsche, and all of his new grandpups! Can’t wait to see new pics.

Are you surprised Nina was by Ian’s side for the birth of his grandpuppies? Sound off below, and feel free to leave your congratulations, too!
