Looking for the latest on Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev’s breakup? We've got all the latest Ian and Nina gossip, news, and more on the stars of The Vampire Diaries and formerly one of Hollywood’s hottest couples.
Elena and Damon may be about to embark on a romantic journey in TVD’s Season 5, but Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev ended their relationship in May 2013, after dating for three years in real life. Where did it all go wrong? Let’s take a look back.
The erstwhile couple first met on the set of The Vampire Diaries in 2009, when Ian was dating someone else. (He boasts an impressive amount of exes, actually.) New York University alum Megan Auld held the enviable title of “Ian Somerhalder’s Girlfriend” until the summer of 2010.
After that, the are-they-or-aren’t-they speculation went on quite a long time between Ian and Nina, despite their 10-year age difference. Adorable, flirty photos suggest Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev were dating as far back as 2010. (Unless you don’t consider vacationing in Australia together — as they did in November of that year — as evidence.)
It wasn’t until 2011 that the duo finally declared their love for one another. “She truly enjoys life," Ian told Us Weekly about his then-girlfriend, Nina. "Her desire to experience and appreciate everything around her, and chuckle and enjoy it, is great." Once the genie was out of the bottle, it was hard to stuff it back in — though they tried. “We haven’t told anyone anything," Nina insisted to Nylon at the time.
Their denials about their romantic relationship (or lack thereof) seemed very unusual after April 2012, when photos of Ian and Nina kissing and cuddling at Coachella appeared. The following month, they went where all wealthy young lovers go: Paris... with their mothers. Despite being trailed by their moms, Ian and Nina were very touchy-feely while sightseeing. Nina finally went public in September 2012, telling Seventeen magazine that she’d fought the connection between herself and Ian for a long time before finally giving in.
Beginning in March 2013, rumors that Ian and Nina had split began circulating. The pair was spotted in New York City separately in late April, and Nina attended the premiere of The Great Gatsby solo on May 1. On May 9, multiple sources confirmed Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev had officially broken up. Some sources blamed their age difference, while others hinted Ian was ready to settle down but Nina was not. Still, insiders insist the two remain friends and will have no trouble working alongside one another while filming The Vampire Diaries Season 5.
