We don’t know how you get ready to face your day, but Ian Somerhalder (Damon Salvatore) steps inside a hyperbaric chamber. The Vampire Diaries star tweeted a photo of himself preparing to receive a heavy dose of oxygen.
“Looking up to the future from inside my Progressive Hyperbaric chamber-I'm almost ready for you world... Just give about another 20 mins in here,” he wrote.
So just what is Ian up to? According to Virginia Mason Medical’s Center for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, the chamber is used to help “patients heal and to alleviate some emergency medical conditions such as the bends or carbon monoxide poisoning.” Unless Ian has been scuba diving in Georgia, we doubt he’s getting treated for anything.
“Hyperbaric oxygen therapy provides oxygen to all parts of the body in amounts greater than possible under normal conditions. This is because 100 percent oxygen is given to the patient under increased atmospheric pressure in a special chamber,” Virginia Mason’s site explains.
Though actress Jenny McCarthy claims such chambers can “prevent cancer,” according to the Mayo Clinic’s site, “there's insufficient scientific evidence to support claims that hyperbaric oxygen therapy can effectively treat” conditions such as allergies, autism, and cancer. Instead, it’s used for gangrene, burns, and patients whose wounds aren’t healing.
Despite the shaky evidence that the chambers are a cure-all, the procedure is relatively safe so we hope Ian enjoys his breath of fresh air!
