Ian Somerhalder Returning For Vampire Diaries Season 6 — Will He Be a Ghost?

Though Damon Salvatore embraced the white light in the Season 5 finale of The Vampire Diaries, Ian Somerhalder will be back for Season 6 of the vampire drama. So, what gives? If Damon is dead, what will his Season 6 role look like? Will he be a ghost? We’re breaking down the spoilers to come up with some speculation!

“I think the ending of the episode is meant to be left up deliberately for speculation of what exactly did happen to [Damon and Bonnie],” showrunner Julie Plec teased to Entertainment Weekly. “I can say for certain the Other Side is gone for good, and I can say for certain that when the Other Side disappeared for good that they had already been dealt with — whether it’s through finding peace or other means. Outside of that [laughs], I think I’ll let the speculation blow around for a little while longer.”

So, Bonnie and Damon were not destroyed with the Other Side. That’s good news! As for where they might be, it seems to be anyone’s guess. The biggest clue seems to come in the form of Gram’s speech to Bonnie before she found peace. She implied that she had found some sort of loophole to keep Bonnie from getting destroyed. Given that Damon was holding Bonnie’s hand when the white light found them, we’re thinking he got in on said loophole, too. It pays to be nice to Bonnie. Remember that in future, yeah, Damon?

Julie continued: “We will definitely see Ian Somerhalder and Kat Graham on the show. I mean, there’s a million different ways that you can do that. But as far as in what context — how, why, and where? — that’s part of the mystery.” Here’s the question: is it even possible to be a ghost now that the Other Side has been destroyed? Maybe? But would Grams really consider that a better option for Bonnie than being forever dead: to live alone in the ghost realm, forced to watch her loved ones live out their lives, but never being able to live out her own life?

Perhaps, this tease Julie gave The Hollywood Reporter can give us some insight: "The way we look at it, Season 6 is a beautiful and organic reset. The theme of the season is everybody gets to start over. That's what we're going to do.” Does this include Bonnie and Damon? And, if so, what kind of reset can you give two characters who were sucked into a blinding white light? Will they be returned to the land of the living, but with no memories of their lives before? Will they be given an alternate universe in which to play out their lives? We will have to wait and see, but, we have to admit: we haven’t been this intrigued by a TVD reset in some time.
