If there’s one thing you can say about Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder, it’s that he is a man committed to his animals. Whether he's rushing his kitty Moke to the cat hospital in the middle of the night, or being there for his dog, Nietzsche, as she gives birth, this pet parent is willing to go the extra mile.
In case you havn't been following Ian religiously on social media — don't worry, that's what we're here for — the TVD star currently has six dogs (five of which are adorable puppies!) and two cats roaming around his Atlanta home. "I think I’m officially a hoarder,” he recently joked to Charlotte-based station WCCB. All jokes aside, we think Ian's dedication to his pets makes him even more swoon-worthy. In fact, if Ian is such a good dad to his pups, we're pretty sure he'd make an excelling papa to tiny humans, too. Not convinced? Here are five pet-related signs we think signify that Ian would make the best dad ever.
He’s an excellent namer
OK, so naming your child is probably one of the less important duties on a parent’s list of responsibilities after things like food and shelter and love, but a bad name can certainly cause some problems for a kid, especially in the teasing department. Which is why Ian’s skill at naming is such a perk. His dog’s name? Nietzsche. That’s a good, solid name, presumably inspired by the German philosopher. Best part? Nietzsche is a girl! A dog (or human) could do much worse… Though, we will admit, it would be a hard name to learn how to spell in the first grade.
He isn’t afraid to ask for help
A concerned Ian asked the Interweb to “send some positive vibes for my little girl, Nietzsche” when the dog went under the knife to be spayed. He also Instagrammed a photo of himself with his dog, demonstrating he is there for his pet when times are tough. How many pet parents can count on more than four million Twitter followers’ positive vibes to help their pet get through surgery?
He’s more than willing to lose sleep
Last April, Nina Dobrev and Ian had to rush their shared cat, Moke, to the kitty hospital in the middle of the night for an undisclosed medical reason. Moke ended up being fine, but the TVD actors lost a night’s sleep over the little kitty. We’re pretty sure Ian didn’t mind too much, though. He told US Weekly earlier this year, “I consider my pets to be mine, my family's and my friends' — so I have more than I could count.” Aww.
He’s capable of going with the flow
Every parent knows flexibility is important — you need to be able to deal with anything that comes at you. This quality was definitely put to the test when Ian found out that Nietzche, the dog he had rescued from the TVD stages, was pregnant with eight puppies. Rather than completely freak out, Ian embraced the pregnancy, calling himself a grandfather and posting an adorable pic of himself cuddling up to Nietzsche, along with the caption: “The calm before the storm...Launching Season 5 of The Vampire Diaries & preparing for the launch of a whole part of life-being a GRANDFATHER. Yup-I've got my hand on a belly with 8 little ones about to explode out into the world … What I thought was one rescue become 9-Mama Nietzsche is a trooper-babies coming in about 48hrs... Aunt @thejram & Uncle @polivierjr GET READY for some BABIES! 2 cats 9 dogs- is that considered a hoarder???”
He’s there for his pets, always
Nietzsche gave birth to her puppies just a few days ago and Ian was there for her with praise and support through the entire thing. He snapped a selfie with Nietzche, and shared this insight on Instagram: “Live from the whelping box In Atlanta! Panting, pushing, contractions — wow. Make no mistake about it — Ladies rule...Women of every species blow my mind...Incredible what mamas go through! Love to you mamas-all over the world. Jeez.” Yeah, we think Ian would make a pretty great dad.
What do you think, TVD fans? Would Ian make a great dad? Sound off in the comments!
