The Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder always tops our list when it comes to his good looks, charming smile, and giant heart, but this year, One Direction managed to beat him out on one of the coolest annual celeb lists. (We know. We’re still not over it either.) So what celebrity title did the British boy band out-rank Ian in?

DoSomething.org’s “Top 20 Celebs Gone Good” list, of course! The website’s annual ranking rightly saw both One Direction and Ian make the list, but with One Direction falling at no. 2, and Ian at no. 8. (Having millions of Directioners on your side certainly helps.) It was crooner Harry Styles’s ex-girlfriend (and pop superstar) Taylor Swift who came away with the top spot. Well done, you do-gooders!

Ian made the list for his charity work through the Ian Somerhalder Foundation, a nonprofit that “aims to empower, educate, and collaborate with people and projects to positively impact the planet and its creatures.” DoSomething.org described Ian as  an “outspoken environmentalist and animal rights activist [who] has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for his cause. The world thanks him for that. And his bone structure.” Hear, hear!

Meanwhile, One Direction were recognized for their Red Nose Day single that raised over two million pounds (GBP) to help those across Africa and the UK who live in severe poverty or injustice. This was in addition to the $784,345 they raised in donations for cancer research.

As for Taylor, the country-pop star was at the top of the list for the second consecutive year! For her 24th birthday, Taylor celebrated by giving a gift of $100,000 to the Nashville Symphony. Other good deed events on this year’s docket: headlining an event that benefited Centrepoint, an organization aimed at helping young people experiencing homelessness.

Basically, everyone on this list is a winner no matter where they ranked!

Are you impressed with these celebs’ good deeds? Do you think Ian should have been higher on the list? Sound off in the comments below!
