We’ve loved following the riveting story of the abandoned dog Ian Somerhalder found wandering near The Vampire Diaries set and decided to take home — only to discover she was pregnant! Since then, Nietzsche has had her pups and Ian has fallen in love with them. Get ready for the next chapter in their story...

“Our puppies! Growing with their new families! Wow. I feel a tremendous amount of pride knowing that these beautiful creatures were born in my home and raised to be exceptional beings. I’m so in love with them - Could not have been possible without an entire team of amazing people,” Ian adorably captioned this snapshot montage of the puppies. In it, we see the dogs being the cutest in a variety of poses and locales — because that’s how dogs operate.

Never one to miss an opportunity to preach his passion, Ian also spoke about the importance of keeping dogs and puppies like these ones from being hurt, abandoned, or worse. His caption continued: “Looking their beauty, I wonder how could anyone EVER want to hurt or abandon creatures like this??? Animal abuse, abuse in general - just can't understand it... Lets help them - help us build the ISF Sanctuary to do just that and much more. Go to isfoundation.org and donate IF YOU CAN OR JUST RETWEET AND SPREAD THE WORD! THANK YOU!”

One of the many function of Ian’s charity, the Ian Somerhalder Foundation, is to work toward species-safe sterilization for animals like Nietzsche. Last month, he also announced a partnership the IS Foundation would be undergoing with Rover.com, a group that helps connect dog owners with approved dog sitters: “We are excited to partner with Rover and thank them for donating to the foundation, uniting their voice with ours, and empowering us to create change,” Ian said in a press release.

Basically, he is planning on saving this world. One dog at a time.

The Vampire Diaries returns Thursday, January 23, 2014 at 8 p.m. on The CW.
