As a smokin’ hot television star in a culture that highly values both beauty and celebrity, Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder (Damon Salvatore) is more than just an actor — he’s a role model. Which is why it’s so cool to see him promote videos like the one Dove just produced about natural beauty. What positive message did Ian have to spread about beauty?

“Very cool-the other side of selfie ;) girls rock. Plain & simple. So cool ladies are thinking like this & expressing it. Yes!” Ian tweeted, along with a link to Dove’s latest promotional video: a treatise on what beauty means to women of all ages, and how we have the power to redefine beauty using something as seemingly simple as a selfie.

The heartwarming vid is centered around mother and daughters. In the three-minute story, daughters encourage their mothers to welcome the physical changes that comes with age: “If you’re gonna age, you’re gonna age. Embrace it! Embrace the age,” one daughter tells her mother.

Another girl muses on the unrealistic expectations media creates around the concept of beauty: “I think a lot of girls compare themselves to what they see in magazines and movies and videos,” she says.

“Isn’t it time to redefine beauty?” the video asks, showcasing one school’s photo exhibit filled with selfies of mothers and daughters taken with no filter and no edits. The result is very cool, and a small step on the long journey to changing cultural and personal perceptions about ourselves. It’s so cool that Ian is choosing to promote such an important idea, and not very surprising given Ian’s own philanthropic work to inspire youth and to change people’s views about the world through the Ian Somerhalder Foundation. Keep up the inspiring work, Smoldypants!
