Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder (Damon) is taking over the Internet! Not really, but he does have 10 million followers on Facebook, which is a heck of a lot. What was his reaction to the big news, and how does he plan to use his powers of online persuasion for good? Read on to find out!

“WOW! FACEBOOK YOU ARE AMAZING!” Ian captioned the Instagram photo of himself holding a sign that reads: “10 million amazing Facebook friends! 10 million changemakers! I am honored to be your friend!” You can tell by the giant grin on his face and his liberal use of the exclamation mark just how excited Ian is at this landmark. For the philanthropist and founder of the Ian Somerhalder Foundation, 10 million Facebook friends means a group of passionate people he can mobilize to make change in the world.

Of course, this isn’t just Ian’s accomplishment. It also belongs to the man in charge of his social media: Oliver Luckett. Last month, PBS’ Frontline did a special on “Generation Like” that featured Oliver and Ian. At the time of filming, Ian had 6.3 million fans, which meant he was reaching 24 million unique people per month. Ian was blown away by the numbers, telling Oliver: “We’re looking at the live numbers of the show, and what you guys have created has a higher number value than actually the viewership of The Vampire Diaries or the United States. It’s just crazy to me.”

Seriously. As Ian puts it in his grateful Instagram caption: “10 MILLION FACEBOOK FRIENDS = 10 MILLION CATALYSTS FOR CHANGE +(10 MILLION solutions x your influence) +(10 MILLION projects x your social media family) +(10 MILLION causes x your followers) +(10 MILLION actions x your interactions) +(10 MILLION Rescues x your shares) +( MILLION votes x you network).” For Ian, this translates to the ability for major global change. “Feel inspired?” Ian asks.
