It’s hard to believe that anyone would turn down Ian Somerhalder, but these things apparently do happen. The Vampire Diaries actor was on Chelsea Lately to discuss his new Showtime series Years of Living Dangerously and opened up about the recent rejection. What did Ian have to say?

When asked by guest host Mary McCormack whether he had ever been turned down by a woman, he said: “Actually, yeah. It recently happened.” What?! Hell really has frozen over. Ian seems to have a very zen attitude to the entire thing, continuing: “It’s cool. It was very appropriate, and it was for the better … It’s good. You have to experience these things in life.”

“No, most people know that. We’re just now blessed with a stupid face,” Mary awesomely responded, sarcastically commenting on Ian’s actually ridiculously beautiful features with a wave of her hand. (And saying what we watching the video were all secretly thinking.) To check out Ian’s adorable response yourself, skip to the 17-minute mark in the video — though, Ian’s appearance begins around the 15-minute mark. Enjoy!

Ian seemed to have a good time on the show. Following his appearance, he shared this silly Instagram photo of his face smushed up next to Chelsea Handler’s book Uganda Be Kidding Me. He captioned the pic: “How did @chelseahandler end up in my hotel room?! Maybe b/c I just Did the Chelsea Lately show with Mary McCormack. SO fun, great audience- I felt really loved. So much awesome estrogen! Thanks Mary! Love, Ian.” How could anyone turn this guy down?
