Ian Somerhalder may be a TV vampire, but he moonlights as a Goodwill Ambassador. The Vampire Diaries star was designated with the honor today by the United Nations Environmental Program. Responsibilities include: battling it out with Gisele Bundchen, Don Cheadle, and Yaya Toure to see who can get the most fans to Go Green. Well, that’s not really a fair competition — Don Cheadle can turn people into trees.

Ian is currently in the capital of Barbados to accept the designation. He shared this photo earlier today, along with the caption: “In Parliament in Barbados about to walk into a room with heads of state and the United Nations Environment Program to make my designation speech as UNEP Goodwill Ambassador. Wow. So surreal... Thank you all for standing here today with me- your voice is so loud. Your compassion so powerful. Thank you- now let's make so [sic] serious shit happen. Lets make sure everyone around you know climate change is real.”

We’re so proud of Ian. In his efforts to Go Green, he is reaching out to communities, businesses, schools, and individuals to spread awareness about climate change and pool resources to make a positive difference. According to the ISF Foundation’s announcement on the subject, Ian had this to say about the efforts: “Humans are currently consuming far more than our planet can provide or sustain. We are polluting our air with carbon emissions, destroying our forests and species, and filling our seas with plastic and waste. The time is now to go greener by making choices that are good for people and the planet.”

If you want to Go Green with Ian, head over to the UNEP website.
