Iggy Azalea Takes on Lorde, Nirvana, and the Beatles — All in the Same Interview!

Thought Lorde had the market on real talk when it comes to the music industry? Step aside, because Iggy Azalea may not be a royal, but she sure is fancy.

The Aussie-born rapper’s debut Hot 100 hits currently hold the No. 1 and No. 2 spots on the American music charts, an accomplishment last made by the Beatles. But even that kind of jaw-dropping comparison doesn’t make the soon-to-be 23-year-old take pause. “It doesn’t mean anything,” she tells Billboard in her cover story interview with the industry hub. “I’d rather be The Rolling Stones.” We won’t tell Paul if you won’t, guys.

Iggy didn’t hold back on her critique of fellow up-and-coming stars like fast-track superstar Lorde. Maybe it’s a New Zealand v. Australia thing, but Iggy didn’t take kindly to the Kiwi crooner’s performance with the surviving members of Nirvana during the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony back on April 10.

“Nothing against her,” Iggy began, never a good sign in an interview, “but I think when you’re doing a tribute to someone that’s dead, generally it should be the person’s peer. Lorde is not Kurt Cobain’s peer. No matter if she killed the performance or not, I just don’t think it’s appropriate.”

The other three performers who took the stage with Nirvana — Joan Jett, St. Vincent, and Kim Gordon — don’t seem to have come up in Iggy’s chat with Billboard.
