Instructor Accidentally Shoots Student While Demonstrating Gun Safety
A loadedgun was discharged during a gun safety class for people seeking permits at a training facility near Cleveland, Ohio, on Saturday, injuring a man. Thankfully, Michael Piemonte's right arm has been treated for the gunshot wound caused by his 73-year-old gun safety instructor Terry J. Dunlap Sr., and no one else was harmed in the incident.
According to the Associated Press, Dunlap was using a .38-caliber handgun to demonstrate self-defense techniques when the gun suddenly misfired. The bullet ricocheted off a table and struck 26-year-old Piemonte in the upper portion of his right arm. Several students in the class were nurses who quickly rushed to Piemonte and were able to stabilize him before he was transported to a nearby hospital.
“My wife was sitting just inches away from me,” Piemonte toldThe Columbus Dispatch. “It could have easily hit her.”
Piemonte toldCNN that Dunlap has been calling regularly to check in, which “makes me feel good that he is so concerned.”
No charges have been filed and the shooting is being called accidental. Piemonte and his wife still intend to complete the course and get their permits this year.
