Insurgent’s Keiynan Lonsdale Talks Shailene Woodley and Pokémon — Exclusive

There’s no doubt about it, Keiynan Lonsdale has us super excited to see the differences between the book and movie versions of Insurgent! But, besides that, we were also curious to know how the 23-year-old Aussie actor got along with co-stars Shailene Woodley and Theo James while shooting the blockbuster film. And, spoiler alert, what he had to say didn’t disappoint us one bit.

Keiynan stopped by the Wetpaint Entertainment offices to talk all things Insurgent — including which faction he’d join, how solid Tris and Four’s relationship is, and why Tris would totally beat Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games in a fight to the death. On top of that, he also discussed his upcoming film The Finest Hour, if he’d join a supernatural show like The Vampire Diaries, and, of course, what his favorite Pokémon is.

Wetpaint Entertainment: What was it like working with Shailene Woodley and Theo James?

Keiynan Lonsdale: Theo is an awesome guy; he’s really kind. And Shailene is what everyone expects. She’s very warm and she’s also super grounded. I found her energy very inspiring because, as a 23-year-old, I don’t really think that’s really common. I know, for me, I’m always in my head and going with trends. But she really seems to be her own person and is really confident and comfortable with that.

When she’s talking to you and you’re talking, she’s actually listening. Like, if she asks you how you are, she’s not just saying it. She actually wants to know! That can be kind of intimidating because someone’s looking deep into your eyes and you’re like, ‘I’m good.’

Tris and Four are such a beloved couple in the YA world, what was it like seeing Shailene and Theo’s chemistry together?

It was cool to be on the set to see how they connected as actors and, behind the scenes, watching them discuss their scenes together and what changes they thought need to be made or how they’d approach something. Obviously they’re not together in real life, but what you see is that connection of being a team and really working together. I like their relationship because it’s a relationship of strength.

And it’s nice for there not to be a love triangle, which is an overused device in YA.

Yeah. It’s not like they’re confused about their feelings for other people. They know it’s them against the world.

If you had to choose which faction of the Divergent world to be in, which would you pick and why?

I would choose Erudite because I guess if I could go to school forever I would. I like the idea of education because I never got to go to college because I’ve been lucky to be performing and stuff. So the idea of constantly educating yourself and putting so much emphasis on knowledge is cool to me.

Who do you think would win in a fight: Tris Prior or Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games?

I’m going to say Tris Prior because, for one, she’s Divergent. Two, she’s Dauntless. And three, because Shailene Woodley does pushups all the time. And a gun against an arrow... [Tris] can throw some good punches and shoot some good bullets.

You have a dance and music background — is that something you’d like to pursue more or is acting your main focus right now?

Dancing was the first thing I ever did and it’s still something I’ll always do for fun just to keep my sanity going because sometimes you need to move around. And then with the music side of things, that’s something I really love and am passionate about but am not going to rush it or anything. I’m just going to take my time and see what happens naturally with that.

What other projects are you currently working on?

I think the day after I wrapped Insurgent I flew to Boston to film another movie called The Finest Hours. I shot that with Chris Pine and Casey Affleck. That was really fun, it was really challenging just because it was a whole different kind of cast and everything was different. I was the youngest — most of them were in their 40s and all had kids — so it was just me and them for four months. Eventually they adopted me as their nephew. That was awesome and I’m excited for that to come out.

There are a lot of Aussies on The CW on The Vampire Diaries and The Originals. Do you know any of those folks?

I don’t think I know any of them personally but I have mutual friends with Phoebe [Tonkin] and Claire [Holt] just ‘cause they did H2O: Just Add Water and my friends are in the remakes of that.

Would you ever sign up for a supernatural show like the ones they’re on?

Sure, that’s just ‘cause I’m a nerd. I’d be interested in doing a lot of things, but I guess I don’t want to be type cast as one thing, so if I can get to play a bunch of different roles and explore different characters I’d be happy.

I saw your Twitter bio and we have to talk Pokémon. What’s your all-time favorite Pokémon?

My favorite Pokémon, aside from Pikachu just because everyone loves Pikachu, is Mankey. My mom bought me a video and I thought it’d be the Pokémon movie, but you know how moms can sometimes get it right but then get it slightly wrong, so she got me one episode and it was just of Mankey.

Insurgent opens in theaters nationwide on Friday, March 20.
