True Blood Is Being Made Into a Musical!

We’re just days away from the premiere of the seventh and final season on True Blood on June 22, but hardcore Trubies will be thrilled to learn that the show will live on even after HBO airs the series finale this fall. No, an eighth season isn’t in the works, but the vampire-centric show (which itself is based on Charlaine Harris’ novels) is getting the Broadway treatment. Yes, the people of Bon Temps are headed to the Great White Way!

Per The Hollywood Reporter, True Blood: The Musical is the brainchild of Nathan Barr, who has written the show’s scores since day one. And although a True Blood musical may seem a bit strange, Nathan’s project has already been blessed by several important people. “This was something that I pitched to HBO and (show creator) Alan Ball,” he said.

Even musically-inclined Stephen Moyer (Bill Compton) helped Nathan put together some samples of the musical for his initial pitch to Alan Ball and HBO. No word yet if Stephen will reprise his role as Bill for the stage, but given that he played Captain Von Trapp in NBC’s live telecast of The Sound of Music late last year, we wouldn’t count it out just yet. This fella’s got an impressive set of pipes!

Like the TV show and books, Sookie Stackhouse is set to be the protagonist of the musical, though Nathan warns that his True Blood reincarnation likely won’t involve all of the characters and plot points we’ve come to know over the series’ seven seasons. “I think we're really going to try to return to the roots of the show,” he explained.

Still, the production is a long way off — Nathan hopes to have a workshop version ready in a year or so — and may not ever make it to Broadway. “There's no guarantees," Nathan cautioned. "But I think the direction we're heading in is really exciting.”

Would you line up to see True Blood: The Musical, or do you think a book series and seven seasons on TV is enough? Sound off below!
