Neil Sedaka said it best — breaking up is hard to do.
True, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Cristina (Sandra Oh) were never in a romantic relationship on Grey's Anatomy — save for some femme-slash fan fiction, of course — but they were closer in their heyday than some Grey Sloan Memorial lovers ever were. Until this season.
It all boils down to the question of family vs. career. Cristina has none of the latter, having refused to raise children with Owen (Kevin McKidd) and having divorced him because they'd never see eye to eye on that matter.
Meredith, meanwhile, is trying to "have it all" but isn't finding it so easy. On the homefront, she has the man of her dreams and two wonderful children. At work, she's still a masterful surgeon, but she's not as innovative and au courant a surgeon as Cristina is, as the latter bluntly (but justifiably) pointed out.
That explosive conversation ripped off the bandage and exposed some long-festering discord between these two besties, and their relationship has yet to recover. And according to Ellen, they may never patch things up since the writers need to extricate Cristina from the series by the end of the season.
Also, narratively, some of the best Cristina/Meredith storylines emerge when they have tension. Remember when Gary Clark had a gun to Cristina's head in the Season 6 finale, and Mer begged for her to save Derek in spite of it? Seven episodes later, a still traumatized Cristina asked Mer, "How are you fine? How are you just completely fine?"
So their split could be good for the writers, the characters, and the fans — but what do you think? Is it worth it? Or do you wish these two could just drink tequila and make amends? Cast your vote with those big blue buttons below.
