Is The Vampire Diaries Doomed?

The Vampire Diaries may have seen an increase in viewers for its big 100th episode last week, but an article in the New York Post is still musing on the imminent demise of the vampire genre — including TVD — in its recent piece, “Is ‘Vampire Diaries’ losing its bite?” What evidence does the punnily-named article present, and do we agree with it? Read on to find out!

The article presents some complex evidence when it comes to the question of the end of the vampire genre. On the one hand, both TVD and True Blood have steadily declined in ratings. On the other hand, both TVD and The Originals are two of the strongest shows for the CW. And, though NBC’s Dracula is not a ratings smash hit, it averages 4.7 million on Friday nights, which is solid numbers for the genre show.

At least one expert seems to think the fad will continue. Brad Adgate, senior VP/director of research at Horizon Media, told The Post: “It’s got very wide appeal, especially among the youth. It’s also a very dual audience — doesn’t have specific appeal to either gender. That’s why it’s been popular. I don’t think that it’s done.”

And TVD’s executive producer Caroline Dries seems to agree: “The fact that we can be so heightened plot-wise allows us to keep stories feeling new and interesting,” she said. “The intrigue of vampires, I don’t feel like that’s ever going to go away, it’s been around forever in literature. It’s that romanticized darkness about it that seems to be universal.”

Well, as fans of both TVD and The Originals, we certainly hope the rumors of the demise of vampire television have been greatly exaggerated. Here’s to 100 more episodes and five more series spin-offs!

Do you think the reign of vampire-themed television is at an end? Would you welcome it? Sound off in the comments below!

The Vampire Diaries airs Thursday nights at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
