Isaiah Washington Returning to Grey’s Anatomy: Great Idea, or Terrible Move?
When Preston Burke skipped town after Cristiana failed to walk down the aisle at their wedding, we didn't expect to ever see him in the halls of Seattle Grace (now Grey Sloan) again. After all, not only was the character's departure dramatic, but it was common knowledge that actor Isaiah Washington didn't leave the show on the best of terms— in fact, just this week he said that he was "glad" he'd been fired from the show. But surprise, surprise: Burke's coming back.
According to TVLine, we can expect Burke to appear in a single Season 10 episode this May. Why would Shonda Rhimes chose to bring him back after so many years? To help provide "at full-circle moment we need to properly say goodbye to our beloved Cristina Yang [who's leaving at the end of the season]," apparently.
We can definitely see why the writers would want Burke back as part of Cristina's goodbye. After all, he was an essential part of her early story. So whether he shows up to help put a cap on their relationship, rekindle it, or something else entirely (maybe he offers her a job elsewhere, no romantic strings attached?), it seems appropriate that he play some role in her departure from the show.
On the other hand, this one-episode appearance could end up being a distraction, and we certainly don't want Cristina to revert back to her old self. Burke left at the end of Season 3, and it's now Season 10 — Cristina has changed and grown a lot. If Burke's reappearance is used to highlight how far she's come, that could be awesome, but we don't want to suddenly feel like we're back to Cristina being an intern.
What do you think: Are you excited to see Burke come back, or do you think it's a bad move? Will it help finish of Cristina's story perfectly, or has he been gone too long to really matter anymore? Sound off in the comments below!
