OITNB’s Jackie Cruz on Flaca and Maritza’s Relationship: “They’re Just Friends” — Exclusive

What’s not to love about Orange Is the New Black’s Jackie Cruz (Marisol "Flaca" Gonzales)? Everything from her signature teardrop tattoo to her eclectic taste in music makes her that much more endearing — that is, until the sweet kiss she shared with bestie Maritza Ramos (Diane Guerrero) made all of our jaws drop in Season 2.

Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with Jackie at an Überliss event at the Paramount Hotel in New York City to discuss her signature beauty and style, what it’s like to work on OITNB, and what that kiss might mean for Flaca and Maritza going forward — including Flaca’s boyfriend!

Wetpaint Entertainment: What are your go-to style and beauty tips for summer?

Jackie Cruz: I use Rituoil from Überliss because I have frizzy hair, so it makes it smooth and shiny. And [braids] is a good hairstyle for the summer. Those are an easy. Put a lip color on and you’re good to go and you look like you worked really hard, but it’s so easy.

I love to wear boyfriend jeans, a T-shirt, and heels. That’s my style…casual. And I love leather jackets, but it’s summer now.

If you love the casual look, it must be great to go to work and wear prison jumpsuits, huh?

Yes, it’s amazing, you’re so comfortable! You can eat whatever you want! I love it and I love being so different from my character when I’m outside of set.

Your trademark on the show is a teardrop tattoo — do you plan on getting any ink yourself?

I have this one, “Taking Care of Business” — I’m obsessed with Elvis and it was the name of his band. My anchor tattoo. And I’m getting a heart here [points to her arm] Saturday. I wear my heart on my sleeve. Oh, and I’m also getting something else, a lion here [points to the same arm] with my best friend because we’re Leos.

If you had to go to prison, what is the one beauty item you couldn’t live without?

[Points to the signature pop of color on her lips].

Tell us more about your music career!

I usually perform at The Bitter End. Lately it was for myself, just for my friends. I love to write music so I try it out at The Bitter End and see what kind of feedback I get, but that’s really a big dream of mine, to sing.

Is there any chance Flaca could get the chance to sing on OITNB?

Oh, let’s put it out there! Yes, there’s a chance. That would be great, she could sing a Smiths song.

What was it like filming the kiss scene between Flaca and Maritza in Season 2?

Oh, I always love talking about it. It’s one of my favorite scenes to shoot because we got to see Flaca’s vulnerability, something different. I feel like, in that moment, you feel all those emotions that she was going through. It was funny. It was touching. It was emotional and it was sad — that’s what I felt and I hope that people saw that.

Will it change their relationship going forward?

Ah, they’re buddies! They’re just friends, so I don’t think anything romantic will happen.

What about Flaca’s boyfriend, Ian? Will he freak out when and if she tells him?

I think, hopefully, I’ll find out more about him in Season 3. I’m dying to know.

What’s it like working on a show that releases an entire season at a time?

I could cry right now. It’s a dream come true. I get to work with talented people, producers, the cast, the crew, everybody is so nice. It’s like living the dream right now.

We haven’t gotten to see many of the backstories for the Latina population at Litchfield — do you think that will change in Season 3?

I hope we learn about all the Latinas! These are real stories. I hope that every cast member has a backstory because I want to know, too. It was so interesting to find out how these women came to be. It doesn’t matter if it’s the Latinas, it’s interesting. Who knows how many seasons we’re going to have, but I hope we get to see all of them.
