On March 17, Team Blake Shelton singers Jake Worthington and Lexi Luca belted out a duet to “It Goes Like This” by Thomas Rhett. Blake chose the song for the 17-year-old country artists in an attempt to prepare them for what’s in store if they do go on to be country musicians.
During rehearsals, Lexi felt the pressure of the competition (as she only received one chair turn) and wanted to impress Blake and mentors The Band Perry so much, that her nerves took over, almost causing the emotional singer to break into tears! After a little comfort from both Blake and The Band Perry’s Kimberly Perry, Lexi was able to calm down, however, Blake felt that Jake, who was advised to open his mouth and enunciate, just might have the upperhand in this battle.
On the final night of rehearsals, Lexi appeared to have gotten over her nerves, prompting Blake to declare that she was finally going to give Jake some competition. Jake, noting Lexi’s bubbly persona, worried that Lexi’s charm just might win over the coaches during their battle.
Coach Usher called the performance pretty “incredible,” but noticed Lexi’s nervousness and told her as a performer she must learn to control it. Usher then told Jake that he was in control of the battle and would give the win to him. Coach Shakira told Lexi that she thought she had major potential, and told Jake to keep his signature nasal tone. Adam Levine noted that Lexi had a couple technical issues, and that Jake was definitely the star two.
When it was time for Blake to critique his singers, he noted that Lexie needed to put a lid on her nerves, and that Jake fumbled on his words at the top of the song, which Blake “wasn’t going to let slide.” However, when it was time for Blake to make a decision, the country crooner went with his “gut” and chose Jake.
