Update (June 12, 2014):
So guess J.Lo couldn’t get a refund on her ticket to Brazil. Jenny from the Block is indeed bound for the home of the 2014 World Cup and actually is probably on a plane right now. Her rep tells People Jennifer is still set to perform during the World Cup opening ceremonies.
“We have been trying to work out scheduling and logistics,” the rep adds. “Any statements to the contrary were premature. Jennifer would not want to disappoint her fans or fans of fútbol. She will be there.”
Original story (June 9, 2014):
After a bad breakup, we don’t feel much like hanging out in the world but that’s a rule we don’t necessarily expect celebrities to follow. So news that Jennifer Lopez is skipping the opener of the World Cup despite singing the global event’s official song has us scratching our heads.
“Regretfully Jennifer Lopez will not be attending this year’s World Cup opening ceremonies,” her rep tells CNN in a statement released June 8.
No reason is given and of course, J.Lo’s people would never say this has anything to do with the 44-year-old’s break up with beau of three years, Casper Smart, but what then would have inspired Jennifer to resend her R.S.V.P. to the event after she’d already confirmed she’d perform “We Are One (Ole Ole)” as the closing number? Honestly. We’d like to know.
If you haven't heard that little ditty, it features Pitbull and Brazilian star Claudia Leitte, who will now perform it sans J.Lo, according to People. The number isn’t a far cry from Shakira’s World Cup anthem from back in 2010 (“Waka Waka” forever, man).
Shak actually does have a number on this year’s official World Cup album (yep, actually a thing). It’s called “La La La (Brazil 2014)” and no offense to Jenny from the Block, but the internet looks to prefer Shakira’s take. Maybe it’s because her resident hunk Gerard Piqué and their adorable son Milan make an appearance in the video.
Why do you think Jennifer’s bowed out of the event?
The World Cup kicks off June 12 in Brazil.
