On the red carpet at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, former Jersey Shore star Deena Nicole Cortese dropped quite the bombshell on us: she’s getting set to launch a singing career.

Since then, we’ve hardly been able to focus on anything else. Music? From Deena? What would it sound like, what would her songs be about and, most importantly, when are we going to hear something? Ever the great sport, Deena took a call from Wetpaint Entertainment and answered all our burning questions.

You told us music has always been a passion of yours, but you’ve never really spoken about it. Why not?

I didn’t want to be another reality star trying to come out and sing. But the people close to me have always known it’s something I’ve wanted to do. I’ve always been in the chorus, I’ve always done shows at school. Finally, I got the courage to give it a try professionally.

Who are your musical influences?

I really love P!nk and Katy Perry. I’m influenced by relatable, emotional stuff.

How would you describe the sound you’re going for?

Empowering female pop. I want to be a voice to help women feel more comfortable with themselves. I want to show the world I’m a lot more than the mess they saw on Jersey Shore. I want to bring to light a lot of issues that myself and a lot of other young women are dealing with.

Do you have any songs written yet?

I have few. For the past three months I’ve just been getting things down on paper and taking voice lessons. I did sign on with a production company named Fireraven. They’re helping get my emotions down on paper and turn my feelings into songs.

Have your former Jersey Shore co-stars been supportive?

Jenni has always been supportive and always wanted me to do it. Ron and Sam agree. And Nicole has told me not to let anyone get me down and that I have to stay positive.

The question on everyone’s mind: when are we going to hear some of this new music?

Probably about three to six months. I don’t want to put anything out until its perfect!
