After news of Buckwild star Shain Gandee’s tragic death broke earlier today, family, friends, and fans have been offering their condolences and support, and MTV just made the biggest gesture thus far, halting the production of Season 2 in Charleston, West Virginia, effective immediately.

A network spokesperson told Deadline that the show has stopped filming, though they will not confirm if shutdown is permanent or if they will air any episodes with Shain if production does continue.

This comes as no surprise considering that Charleston mayor Danny Jones told TMZ that he wants Buckwild canceled in light of Shain’s death, saying, “Of the few cast members on the show, already two have had legal issues and now one has died.  The show only enhances the negative stereotype the Kanawha Valley already has. I hope the show’s life is short.”

While MTV has yet to release an official statement about the show’s fate, considering that Shain’s best friend (and co-star) Joey Mulchy tweeted that it will be “hard to watch reruns,” we have a feeling that the cancellation will come shortly out of respect for Shain’s family and friends. Alternatively, they could use the footage as a tribute to the late reality star, like when Sony Pictures released Heath Ledger’s final film, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus in 2009 after partially recasting the role.
