What if you took all the elements of Laguna Beach and The Hills — the super-attractive teenagers, the expensive production value, the dramatic music, and the up-close voyeuristic filming style — and changed the location from the rich fantasy world of Orange County to the real-life world of Washington Heights in NYC?

You’d have MTV’s new show, Washington Heights, which premieres on Wednesday, January 9 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. And we have to say that, based on the trailer below, we’re hooked already.

Don’t let the cast’s good looks fool you — according to the show's official site, all 9 of the cast members hail from the small neighborhood in upper Manhattan from 155th Street to the Harlem River, aka Washington Heights. They’re all ambitious, creative, and, unsurprisingly, have complicated love lives.

As we noted before, MTV’s new show, Buckwild looks like it’s being presented as Jersey Shore’s replacement, even taking over Jersey’s time slot on Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT (premiering January 3). Washington Heights looks less like a Jersey replica, and more like a grittier, East Coast version of shows like Laguna Beach.
