According to TMZ, Jersey Shore producers had warned The Situation to ease up on his alcoholic tendencies long before his recent decision to clean up his act and go to rehab.

“Producers from MTV and 495 Productions sat Situation down for the first time while shooting Season 2 in 2010 — explaining his drinking had become such a problem...it was making it hard to shoot the show.”

The source claims that Mike had trouble taking the advice seriously, and continued to party too hard through Season 3. This led to a second warning from producers, “this time threatening to replace him on the show if he didn’t clean up his act.”

But both of these warnings apparently didn’t stick — The Situation apparently started to “show promise” during Season 4 in Italy. Sadly, as most of us saw along with producers, Mike seemed to only get worse once the gang returned to Seaside for Season 5.

Ironically, the producers have finally gotten their wish — Mike is in rehab and most likely wishes to remain sober for the filming of Season 6 — but TMZ reports that his sobriety might be all the more reason to recast.

Of course, Jersey Shore creator SallyAnn Salsano told Wetpaint Entertainment in an exclusive interview that recasting was news to her, and she thought of Mike and the others as her children. So it’s most likely too soon to tell just how big (or small) The Situation’s presence in Season 6 will be.
