While in court yesterday, Jersey Shore fixture Jonny “The Unit” Manfre plead not guilty to drug possession charges and now Wetpaint Entertainment has exclusively learned the real reason behind his plea.

The Unit was infamously arrested outside the Jersey Shore house last summer after police allegedly found Ketamine (aka Special K) on his person. (The cast was filming Season 5 at the time.)

But Johnny’s attorney explained the not guilty plea stemmed from issues related to the arrest.

"There were some issues regarding my client's constitutional rights,” his lawyer told TMZ yesterday. “We actually entered the not guilty plea because we believe that based on those issues, John is not guilty.”

Now, we can exclusively reveal exactly what those issues are. “It has to do with the search that was conducted when police arrived at the house,” a friend of Unit’s exclusively tells Wetpaint Entertainment. “Unit’s lawyer doesn’t believe the search was legal. And he feels there is enough evidence to support that claim.”

Despite his plea of not guilty, it’s clear the arrest was life changing for the Unit. Recently, he told us that the arrest prompted him to get sober. He now lives a life that’s drug-free.

Jersey Shore airs Thursdays at 10 pm ET/PT on MTV.
