Watch Jessica Sanchez’s Stripped-Down Cover of Ariana Grande’s “Tattooed Heart” (VIDEO)

It’s been far too long since we’ve heard from American Idol Season 11 runner-up Jessica Sanchez. Since finishing second to Phillip Phillips on the FOX reality competition, the pint-sized powerhouse has been relatively low-profile, most recently releasing a charity single for victims of Typhoon Haiyan. So we were excited when she uploaded a new cover to YouTube late last week — and an Ariana Grande cover, at that!

On January 31, Jessica recorded a tribute to her fellow mini R&B diva, opting for “Tattooed Heart” — the ballad that brought Ariana to the public consciousness at last fall’s American Music Awards 2013. Introducing the cover, J.Sanchez admits to being a big fan of Ari: “I absolutely love her. She’s so, so talented, and I can not wait for you guys to hear this,” she says.

Standing alone in a room, Jessica then breaks into song over a simple computer backing track. For anyone who forgot about how talented the 18-year-old Idol alum is will be immediately reminded here. Girlfriend has clearly been practicing — we didn’t think she could get more perfect vocally!

Now, there’s plenty of room for both fans of Ariana’s original and Jessica’s take on the retro tune. While some of us might prefer Ari’s fluttery, Mariah-esque notes, others might choose Jessica’s power notes reminiscent of Jennifer Hudson — or even Whitney! Though “When You Believe” will never be topped, we can always use a new generation of diva duets!

Do you prefer Jessica’s cover or Ariana’s original? Tell us in the comments below.
