JoAnna Garcia Swisher to Lead ABC’s Astronaut Wives Club — Goodbye, Ariel?

If you’ve enjoyed seeing JoAnna Garcia Swisher flip her fins as Ariel on Season 3 of Once Upon a Time, we’ve got some bad news for you. The ginger goddess has just been cast as one of the leads on ABC’s straight-to-series drama Astronaut Wives Club. Does that mean her days as The Little Mermaid are numbered?

TVLine alerted us to the fact that JoAnna has snagged the part of Betty, the wife of one of the original astronauts involved in the 1960s space race. The site describes the role as one with “down-home appeal” that makes her a very endearing character. Betty has a bit of a clairvoyant touch and becomes concerned that her hubby will die — and since her dreams usually come true, we expect this gal to work up some major nerves.

The show is penned by Stephanie Savage, a co-creator of The CW’s Gossip Girl, and is based on Lily Koppel’s 2013 bestseller.

With this show being straight-to-series for ABC, it doesn’t have to worry about getting picked up later on, giving JoAnna a bit of job security. While that’s great and all, it also means that she knows she’s got a leading lady role on a new show, which could possibly mean that Ariel is gone for good — or will at least have a lot less screentime.

While there’s no official word on Ariel’s future, we definitely think we'll be seeing less of her going forward. Luckily, JoAnna will be staying within the ABC family, so perhaps she could find a few spare moments to don her fins once more. But if this could be her swan song, hopefully Ariel and Prince Eric get their happily ever after.

Are you excited to hear about JoAnna’s new role? What do you think this means for Ariel? Hit the comments and sound off!
