The unthinkable has happened on Game of Thrones. King Joffrey Baratheon (Jack Gleeson), the First of His Name, King of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, and Protector of the Realm, has died. How do you feel about that?
At first glance, we’re certainly glad to see Joffrey go. He was the show’s greatest villain, a vicious twerp whom we’ve hated since the pilot episode. He deserved to die. His death seems to signal a turning point in the show, showing that maybe the good guys can win afterall, and that, eventually, bad things do happen to bad people. Plus, his death couldn’t have come at a better time, since he was being the worst when it happened. We’re glad we won’t have to see his smug face ever again.
Having said that, we’re actually going to miss Joffrey. Yeah, we hated him, but he was so much fun to hate. When you’re rooting for the good guys on a TV show, it’s just as important to have a great villain to root against. Without Joffrey, we’re not sure GoT has one quite as delightfully wicked anymore. Tywin is too classy and clever, Cersei’s just sad, and Ramsay Bolton is too weird and gross. Maybe Walder Frey has potential, but his appearances are so infrequent that we could never form the love to hate relationship with him that we had with Joffrey. Plus, Jack Gleeson was so amazing in the role, his absence will be notable.
So what do you think? Are you glad Joffrey’s gone, or are you going to miss having him around?
