Though their divorce was finalized back in 2009, the bitterness between Kate and Jon Gosselin lingers on — most recently evident in their tit-for-tat media battles and Jon’s threat to sue for custody of their 9-year-old sextuplets. But do you know the original cause for their split? This week on Couples Therapy, Jon reveals that, contrary to public belief, it was not infidelity (on his part) that drove these two apart.
Jon and his girlfriend Liz Jannetta are currently starring on the VH1 reality show, and in this episode, they’re dealing with their own trust issues in group therapy. This is what brings up the topic of Jon’s tumultuous relationship with his ex-wife, and the rumors that he stepped out on his marriage.
“My marriage was very non-affectionate,” he starts in the clip. “It was just kind of like 10 years of a business transaction. So many kids, it was just like ‘we don’t have time to work on our marriage!’”
But just because things were tough, Jon says, it doesn’t mean he had an affair. “The biggest misconception is that the reason we got a divorce was that I cheated on my wife… I didn’t.”
He continues to state that it was pretty clear, on both ends, that the marriage was kaput. “I knew it was over January 17, 2009 … I just knew. It was a definitive day.”
From there, the reality star said he started going out at night until all hours, and Kate stopped saying anything to him. It sounds like it was almost like an understanding between the two that they were finished. Interesting!
