Cue record scratch. We repeat, no engagement rings were involved in the making of tonight’s Bachelor finale. Nikki and Juan Pablo are dating — exclusively, so like, no midnight ocean swims on the side— but the two are not engaged to be married.
“Honestly, I have a ring here in my pocket, and I’m not going to use it,” he told her. “I’m not 100% sure that I want to propose to you, but at the same time, I’m 100% sure that I don’t want to let you go.”
Nikki had just said she wanted nothing more than to hear him say, “I love you.” He didn’t say that. Instead, “I like you a lot. A lot,” was all she got. Nikki accepted his final rose, but clearly, they are not engaged.
While this might seem groundbreaking in terms of recent Bachelor history, it’s actually not even close to the first time a Bachelor has ended his season without handing out a ring.
Throughout the show’s 18 season history, a total of seven Bachelors didn’t propose during the finale. (Curious which seven? We’ve dug up all the details for you.) Recently, though, fans have come to expect a finale proposal. The most recent Bachelor to not get down on one knee was Brad Womack back in Season 11, though it’s worth noting that even he proposed during his second go-round as the Bachelor in Season 15.
Are you surprised to see that Juan Pablo isn’t jumping down on one knee to start a happily ever after with Nikki and Camila? Or, based on his approach to romance this season, does this whole thing not really come as a shock? Head below and share your thoughts!
