Juan Pablo Galavis made waves on March 10 in the Bachelor Season 18 finale, when he chose Nikki Ferrell and the two of them made it clear they weren’t interested in being attached to the show any longer. They didn’t make the traditional Jimmy Kimmel appearance, skipped Good Morning America on Tuesday morning, and haven’t been doing the usual rounds with TV and radio shows. Basically, they tried to refuse all publicity… except for that time they did the People magazine cover today.

We can’t blame the couple for wanting to use the media opportunity to straighten out the negativity thrown at them. While Nikki used Twitter yesterday to call out haters, they go into more depth in the mag article. "It's hard because [viewers] saw a character on TV," Juan Pablo tells People. "A lot of things about me were not shown. I'm not a bad guy. People who know me, know who I am."

Indeed, many of his Bachelorette Season 9 co-stars have expressed support for him, and Ali Fedotowsky and Jillian Harris both seem to be in his corner. But what really matters to Juan Pabs is that his not-fiancée Nikki is with him.

"You go on [The Bachelor] thinking if there is the connection, you propose," he says of the way the show works traditionally. "But I don't feel there's a need to propose to somebody if I don't feel 100 percent. I didn't know Nikki. I want to know more, a lot more." At the time of the November finale taping, he had only known Nikki for two months. With four months together in their covert relationship, surely he’s gotten some perspective. And it sounds as though she has, too.

"Had he gotten down on one knee, I absolutely would have said yes. But having a ring on my finger wouldn't stop us from breaking up. What's going to keep us together is having a real relationship. I'd rather have him propose when he feels it's right,” the Kansas City-based pediatric nurse says.

Nikki was clearly disappointed when Juan Pablo offered her a rose instead of a ring, but she insisted on the “After the Final Rose” special that everything was fine. One report claims that the two are headed to Miami for a while before taking a vacation — on their own dime — and then figuring out where they’ll live.

So, is that the plan? Well, they’re not saying, exactly, even to People. Juan Pablo would say only, "It's our start now. We can get to know each other fully. We're not in a rush."
