Julianne and Derek Hough Talk Guest Judging, Amy Purdy, and Maksim Chmerkovskiy (VIDEO)

Dancing With the Stars pro champ siblings Derek Hough and Julianne Hough are heading out on tour at the end of May, and they stopped by Access Hollywood this week to promote the show. They also talked about Season 18, Julianne’s guest judging, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Amy Purdy, and Derek’s motivation for staying on DWTS after five trophies.

You can watch the seven-minute Access video below, but here are some of the highlights.

Julianne: Maks and Meryl Had Breakthrough After Comments

Julianne was asked if she’d talked to Maks yet, after her comment that Maks phoned in his Switch Up dance with Danica McKellar. Julianne said, “You know what, no, actually. We haven't personally talked. But look, I've been friends with Maks since I was 10 years old. Everybody on that show is like family to me. I wouldn't say anything unless I really felt it. I don't want to be that judge that goes on there and sugar-coats everything and makes everything fun."

Derek jumped in, "That's what I would do. I'd be like 'You're all amazing! Candy for everyone!'" But he gave kudos to her for speaking her mind.

Julianne said she just wanted to see more of what Danica could do. "Also, I think coming back the next week, that breakthrough from Maks and Meryl was amazing, and you really see this different side of Maks." She loved their dance that week, and the week after they were even better. "So look, I'm not saying it was maybe the right thing or the wrong thing [to say] but I just think that it did something and I think they've been better."

Derek Doesn’t Dance For Trophies Anymore

Derek has won DWTS five times, three times more than anyone else. Access’s Kit Hoover teased him, asking how jealous Maks was of him. Poor Derek, but it led him to talk about Amy and his reasoning for being on DWTS. "For me, my motivation has definitely changed for the past couple of seasons for why I'm doing the show,” Derek said. “It's those experiences you have with your partner. ... For me, I haven't really been doing it for the trophy for a while. I've been winning, but I haven't been doing it for that reason."

Billy Bush asked if he went to the producers and asked to dance with Amy. "I did, actually,” Derek said. “Well, what happened was, after last season was so successful, it was an amazing year, I was just kind of like 'what else, what else is there, what's the next thing?'" He wanted to progress some way in the show and for himself. The producers told him there would be a contestant with a disability and that really piqued an interest in him. "When I found it was [Amy] I immediately jumped on board. 'I have to work with her.' I'm all about what inspires me, what moves me."

Move Live on Tour

Julianne said their upcoming tour ties into what Derek was saying about Amy — it’s about what moves you, and that's why they called it "Move" Live on Tour.

Julianne said when she and Derek dance together they have almost like a twin language. Their co-choreographers for the tour are Tabitha and Napoleon D'Umo — Nappytabs — of So You Think You Can Dance, and the Houghs are excited to work with them.

Derek said they want the audience to be out of breath when they leave. Derek and Julianne will be in the audience, and they'll bring people on stage. They don't just want people to physically move, they want people to feel moved and inspired. Get more details on the tour here. A few shows are already sold out!

Are you going to try to see the Houghs on tour? What do you think of the idea that Julianne’s comment to Maks helped him in some way? Agree?

DWTS Season 18 airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
