Julie Chen Responds to Plastic Surgery Haters: “I Don’t Look Less Chinese”
When Big Brother host Julie Chen opened up about her decision to undergo eyelid surgery on an episode of The Talk last week, she knew that there would be mixed reactions to her choice, but she wasn’t prepared for how personally friends and family would take the news.
Julie revealed on the September 11 episode of her CBS talk show that she had given in to career pressure from a racist agent who told her she’d never succeed without surgery. “I cannot represent you unless you get plastic surgery to make your eyes look bigger,” she recalled the agent telling her. “After I had that done, the ball kind of did roll for me. I struggle with, wow, ‘Did I give into the man?’... I don’t like to live with regrets. I did it. I moved on. No one’s more proud of being Chinese than I am.”
Despite being comfortable with her decision now, Julie revealed on Monday’s show that she’s had mixed reactions, particularly from members of the Asian community, since revealing her decision to go under the knife.
“What was hurtful was that the hateful comments that I read, where people were judging me were people from within my own community. It was comments like, ‘Way to give into the Western standards of beauty!’ ‘You’re denying your heritage — you’re trying to look less Asian.’ Guess what? I don’t look less Chinese! I’m not fooling anybody!”
