Julie Plec on Why Writing The Originals New Pilot Is a Struggle

Good news: The Vampire Diaries Season 5, Episode 1 is brilliant. Bad news: The Originals new pilot is taking a little longer to come together.

Over the weekend, Vampire Diaries creator Kevin Williamson tweetedHey guys, guess what fifth season opener I just read? So awesome. Kudos to the brilliant @carolinedries.” Caroline Dries is taking over many of executive producer Julie Plec’s duties, because the latter is also running The Originals this fall.

In response to Kevin’s praise, Julie tweeted, “Ep 1 of TheOGs will be brilliant as soon as @MichaelNarducci and I finish it.”

So what’s the problem? It’s a lot to pack in to 44 minutes! If you’ll recall, The Originals’ backdoor pilot aired an episode of TVD Season 4. Instead of re-airing the same thing, Julie and her crew of writers are crafting a brand new episode. In addition to introducing new viewers — who might not be Vampire Diaries fans — to the lore surrounding the Original family, the first episode of Season 1 also needs to explain Hayley’s (Phoebe Tonkin) baby situation... and much more.

Here’s how Julie explained it in a few tweets: “YOU try writing one [episode] where the backstory covers 1000 years, an immortality spell, a hybrid curse, a vampire vampire hunter... a miracle baby, a return to a city left 100 years ago after arriving 300 years ago having nothing to do with 1000 years ago.”

Yep, that’s a lot for just one episode! But hey, we have total faith that Julie and the rest of The Originals writers can pull this one off!
