It seems like everyone in Hollywood wants to give Justin Bieber a helping hand since his arrest last week. First we hear Miley Cyrus’ dad, Billy Ray, wants the Biebs to join him for a little outdoorsy recuperation. Now, a Backstreet Boy has offered up his expertise in dealing with life as pop star.
A.J. McLean fought a very public battle with substance abuse and tells People magazine he wants to help Justin get through his recent rough patch.
The 36-year-old knows Justin’s manager, Scooter Braun, and says he plans to reach out via Scooter to see if he and the Biebs “can have a sit-down, take him under my wing, and tell him what it was like for me at that age, and maybe see if he will actually hear me.”
Justin, of course, hasn’t publicly discussed any issues with substance abuse although a small trace of alcohol was found when police arrested the 19-year-old last week. He also admitted to smoking marijuana. Other reports have surfaced that Justin’s California home was littered with codeine and illegal drugs when the police raided it earlier this month in the infamous “Egg Raid.”
A.J. tells People that part of his and Backstreet’s success came from being surrounded by “really supportive people who didn’t ‘yes’ us to death.”
“Who knows who he’s surrounding himself with that are egging him on, no pun intended,” he adds.
If A.J. does get to chat with Justin, he hopes they can get to the bottom of what’s bringing about his recent worrisome behavior. “This could be a cry for help for all we know,” he says. “Obviously he has to go through what he’s going through, and hopefully he comes out the other end a better, stronger human being.”
