American Idol’s Justin Guarini Joins Wicked — He’s Broadway-Bound Again!
February 5 has been a big day for American Idol runner-ups! Just as Season 2's Clay Aiken announces his U.S. Congress candidacy, Broadway.com reports that Season 1's Justin Guarini is headed to the Broadway production of Wicked!
In case you're not a fan of Broadway or Kristen Chenoweth or Idina Menzel (or, you know, fun), Wicked is a 2003 musical based on a 1995 Gregory Maguire novel which serves as a prequel to L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
The critically-adored musical focuses on Elphaba and Glinda — the former compassionate and introverted, the latter vapid and popular — through their alternating rivalry and friendship as a series of events under the Wizard's corrupt government turns Glinda into the Good Witch of the North and Elphaba into the (misunderstood) Wicked Witch of the West.
Justin will play Fiyero, a prince and love interest for both witches.
It's not the 35-year-old singer's first time treading the boards of the Great White Way — he has previously appeared in Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, American Idiot, and Romeo and Juliet.
Congrats, Justin! Glad to see Kelly Clarkson isn't hogging all of the spotlight this days.
