We thought we knew everything there was to know about Teen Mom 2's Kailyn Lowry, but it turns out there's way more to this girl than meets the eye. Before she was a MTV star, Kailyn had a pretty rough adolescence filled with unplanned pregnancies, sexual abuse, and lackluster parental units. Fans of Teen Mom 2 already know that Kailyn has a strained relationship with her alcoholic mom, Suzi, but this gal opened up about the neglect she suffered in her recent memoir, Pride Over Pity (available April 22).
“I remember being dropped off at friends’ houses and sometimes not getting a phone call for what seemed like days,” Kailyn wrote in an excerpt transcribed by RadarOnline.com. “In those times, when she would disappear for days without warning, I’d wonder if I would ever see her again.”
Kailyn dealt with her mom's neglect by lying to people about her whereabouts, defending her when she showed up to school drunk, and getting high. “Smoking pot became the hobby I’d never had as a little girl,” she says. “It made me feel like I was part of a group. But it didn’t take away the hurt or fury I was holding onto. Anyone I disagreed with would get attitude from me. I talked back to teachers, peers, anyone who rubbed me the wrong way. Occasionally, I got physical and would throw a punch.”
Kailyn has since dealt with her anger (though she still occasionally lashes out at her husband, Javi Marroquin), no longer uses drugs of any kind, and has almost no contact with her mother (although it has been reported that they have reconciled). Instead, she's adopted Javi's family as her own, and isn't even in touch with her maternal grandparents!
“Sadly, I don’t have any contact with my grandparents now,” Kailyn explains. “From what I heard from family members, my mom created a hell of a story. She accused me of stealing $10,000 from Jo [Rivera] and told them I was headed to jail because I was charged with a felony. In reality, I didn’t do anything, but that could be the reason they cut me off.”
Luckily, Kailyn now has a tight-knit family of her own — and she refuses to make the same mistakes her mom did. “I’ve seen what can happen when you’re addicted to alcohol,” she explains. “I’m afraid the same addiction runs through my blood.”
We have a strong feeling that Kailyn won't suddenly turn into an addict — she's way too wise and mature for that, despite her family history!
