Kandi Burruss seems every bit the happy newlywed, so it may come as a surprise to fans that she wasn’t always keen on the idea of marriage!

The former Xscape singer reveals to Ebony that, before she found love with Todd Tucker, she wasn’t entirely sure that tying the knot was in her future.

Both of my parents have been married multiple times. With that being said, I never really had confidence in marriage,” says Kandi. “I felt like, if you can get married and divorced so easily, ain’t that just like going together?”

Although Todd and Kandi are currently spending time on opposite sides of the country, with work bringing him to L.A., Kandi says that they’ve put ground rules in place to keep their marriage strong. “To me, you have to do things like that and make your relationship a priority,” she says. “Our new rule is to not let two weeks go by without spending time together.”

While we can imagine that seeing so much drama both at home and in the relationships of her Real Housewives of Atlanta castmates could put a damper on her belief in love working for the long term, it seems that Todd has finally changed that.

I think love changes things. And as I got older, I wanted a teammate to spend the rest of my life with …  Todd and I are a force. We’re able to do things together that I probably wouldn’t have even thought about. He pushes me. He motivates me. I just love us.”

Are you surprised by Kandi’s confession about how she feels about marriage? Do you think that Mama Joyce’s vocal protests about her relationships contributed to her opinion?
